It's not hard to create content that people want to read, like, share and bookmark, once you know what they want. To know what they want, you need to do a bit of research and create an avatar - a virtual person or identity that represents your audience. You can ask them what they want and need, based on the data you have about your audience.
Why create this high quality content? Because when you create one great piece of content that your audience can't take their eyes off, they will want more, they will share it with others that they know may be interested, they will like it and they will bookmark your stuff. These are the reactions you want from your readers, it keeps them coming back and makes them bring more people. You want fans, not visitors, this is where blogging success lies.
Creating one awesome piece of content will do more for your blog than creating 5 semi-useful ones. This is why you shouldn't be concerned with blogging every single day, you should be concerned about creating amazing content for your readers, on regular basis. Regular basis can be every day, twice a week, once a week, or twice a month, whatever works for you. The key is quality and consistency.
Creating An Audience Avatar For Your Blog
We will create an avatar named Bob, he will be our ideal reader. Let's pretend our blog is about becoming a better golfer, I know that Bob is interested in exactly that, learning tricks and techniques for better golfing. I personally don;t know the first thing about golfing, so pardon my lack of correct terminology or methodology here.
What else do we know about this guy? He is probably comfortable in his finances, he either has a good job or self employed. The reason I think this, is because golf can be an expensive hobby/sport, so you must be financially comfortable to be able to spend money on expensive golf stuff.
Bob is probably married and has 2.5 children. Bob lives in the suburbs in a medium wealth neighborhood and he drives an SUV. This is not important for our purpose but it gives this fictitious person, a bit of reality.
Create Content For Bob
Now that we understand who Bob is, we can cater to him with our content. We can create a how-to articles about golf swing tricks, we can tell him where to find great hidden golf courses in the country he should try out. We can write about perfecting the stance and recommend to him the perfect putters.
Watching the industry developments and news, we can see what Bob's reaction would be to it and we can write to address those reactions. When a new gold club is announced, we can recommend it to him or tell him why it's not what he needs.
There are so many things we can predict about our audience, just by running it through Bob. It takes a lot of guess work out and gives you more information to work with.
Recommended Formats & Types Of Content
As you can imagine, there is lots of types of content you can create, there are just plain articles, how-to's, tutorials, top-10 lists, resource lists, check-lists, reviews, controversial topics, infographics, podcasts, interviews, PDF downloads and blog series. So much to choose from, but utilizing all these will keep your blog alive and interesting. I talk more about these in this post.
The top formats that are the most popular today are the How-To articles and Top-10 Lists. Infographics are also big, as well as resources lists. Begin with these and then roll into all the other formats. Have a nice variety to keep things interesting.
Make It Easy To Like, Share & Bookmark
I see lots of good content on the Internet, on blogs as well as regular websites. Sometimes, I see something I want to share or like, or bookmark for later, but there is no way to do it, no sharing buttons are available. Of course if the content is super amazing, I will find a way to do this, but in most cases, it is just good, not super amazing, so my urge to share is not that great. It's just good enough for me to click on a share button, but I am usually too lazy to go and copy the URL and then go to Facebook and paste it there and so on.
This is why you need to get rid of barriers between the reader and sharing. I is not rocket science to add sharing buttons to a blog, WordPress is actually great at this, all you need to do is install a plugin..
So before you say your blog is ready to go, add the sharing buttons to it. Here is how you need to do this.
There are many sharing plugins available, and I do not have a favorite one, but here is what I have installed on my blog that you are reading now. The plugin is called Scrolling Social Sharebar.
To install it, log into WordPress, then go to Plugins > Add New, then enter Scrolling Social Sharebar into the search box and search.
When you fond it, click Install Now and Activate it when it is ready.
To configure it, go to Settings > Scrolling Social Sharebar, set your options and save. That's it, not your content is easily shareable.
Create Great Content
Everytime you sit down to write a blog post, don't just write for the sake of filling a blogging day, write something useful, help someone out, make someone's day with the information you are creating. The more you focus on this as your goal, the more your readers will want to come back and read your stuff, they will share it and get others to come and read it. This is how you grow a blog and invest in the future.
If you have any questions, please write them in the comments and I will do my best to answer as promptly as I can.
